Markets
Meta-Markets is an uninterrupted stock market, up and running 24/7, like a living organism. Currently, we have 4 active markets: Feedburner, Delicious, Flickr, and Facebook. In these markets, shares of people's socially networked products (blogs, bookmarks, photos, profiles) are traded. We decide on markets based on two criteria: (1) popularity and (2) accessibility through their APIs.
In parallel with the dramatic evolution of social interactions on the Internet, we are hoping to expand Meta-Markets with more markets. One of our major goals is to create spaces where people speculate and negotiate on the value of people's online creative work, which we call socially networked creative products. We believe that wherever there is ambiguity on the value of such products, there is an opportunity for a market.
We are also interested in more experimental markets. Check out an early experiment, A Stock Market in Life (2006). By using sensors we registered how many people are in a closed public space (cafe, gallery, club etc.) at any given time and fed this information to a stock market server. In this experiment, people were able to buy and sell shares of these spaces, whose values fluctuated based on the number of people in them. This experiment was a precursor to Meta-Markets.
